Today i was embarrassed to no end and not by a clueless creature, well not of the usual type, this 1 a local guy unfortunately, is almost total and useless is not the word when it comes to this numpty. He's lead around daily by a woman who seems to act as some kind of human guide dog he does have a cane but as far as i know, its just for show as he is yet to use it
............................................................
being in this guy's company is depressing enough without him asking all in sundry for help, to get thru a door, that is wide open.I said "if you used the cane you would know that and not stand there making an arse of yourself and the adventurous {emphasised} men and women who make a dangerous daily journey just to buy a pint of bloody milk!" Needless to say he was less than impressed but the point is that him and others like him perpetuate the view that we are all incapable eejits and our only use is to look pathetic in charity ads.
Oh yeah i know exactly what you mean! Just today, this girl started talking shit on me to my sister, saying that I should be removed from my school, because i try to intentionally hit people with my cane, my eyes freak everybody out (my eyes move uncontrollably) and that when i do bump into someone, i dont apologize! First of all, i do apologize, its just that most of the time people run away too fast to even hear me say anything, so they conclude that im a horrible person. Second of all, if i was intentionally trying to hit anybody, i would definitely not just tap them lightly on the foot, i would raise it up and hit them in the head with it as hard as I could! I think i should do that to this girl.....People just dont know.....Stupid assholes.....
well, i'm not in school any more but, when i was i had the same problems. Funny looks and the like people looking at me as if i was tupid shit like that. Just skrew them is my view lol.
Maybe if you people grew some balls and didn't take shit people wouldn't give it to you, go play sports, football's fun or are you to much of a girly man to do that?
wll, school sucked for me. Most of the peole there were mean to me, but my grad year, I just didn't take any shit from them any longer. If they had something to say, I would just say something back. I also can't stand those people who are blind that go around trying to get pitty from others. I think that's stupid. We are just as good as anyone else, and if others fail to see that, than they're the ones with the problems. I'm glad I learned that. I mean sure I have my bad blind days, but I think everyone has those. I think that blindguy does have a good point when he says just show them different. If we get in their faces so to speak, they can't do much about it.
This guy is middle aged i should have pointed that out.But Niblet i know exactly how you feel i suffer the same ignorance daily and mostly from people who have known me for years.

Being a stroppy eejit is 1 answer though not very productive..consider this {If when you really need help will any one offer if they think you might jump down their throat}

What ticks me off is the way everyone contributes to his helplessness they would never dream of speaking to him as I did but then pity is easier to deal with.At 13 I regularly used to escape in to Glasgow to 1 store only because the owner would let me try out his electric guitars,I doubt said numpty would know 1 end from the other!.
Goblin, before I make any comment, I'm curious what your goals are with this person and how you're treating him if you're not pitying him. You may well just ahve to give up depending on that person and your expectations of him.
that reminds me a lot of someone I went to school with. He thought he was all that and more, but when it came to doing things for himself, he absolutely did not want to do them.
One of his friends and I had a class right across the hall from him one year, and right in the middle of class, at least every other day he would come into our class and want to borrow something of his friend's, and his friend would just hand it over to him.
What really surprised the hell out of me, was one morning, he came in and wanted to borrow his friend's hard drive, and I'm like "Ryan, why are you letting him borrow your hard drive," and he was like "cause his hard drive is broken."
I always thought every time this happened, "what's he gonna do when one day you're not there?"
Yeah, i hate it when other blind people try to get pity from everyone, and what really sucks is they're likely to get it, because if people aren't mean to you and make stupid comments, then they pity you and want to practically wipe your ass for you.
Hmmm, I can't say I've ever run into anyone who was so dependent like some of you have. As for how I was treated in high school, there were the few guys who would do things to annoy me, and I did get annoyed, but they could have been a lot more brutal. I think the worst thing was that I was just ignored most of the time, especially by the girls. But I guess being a blind guy wasn't any form of status or anything, right? Hahahaha! I admit I'm not the most independent or adventurous person around, but I'm neither pittiful or some kind of superblink. I also feel I'm responsible for how I look but not necessarily how all blind folks look, despite society's seen-one-seen-them-all attitude.
Depending on him!? What? If and when I depend on anyone it will be either myself,or my partner.
I was only trying to alert him to stupidity of his "i cant" attitude and the effect it has on the way sighted people percieve the blind/vi but as usual he's refusing to listen
............................................................This numpty thinks crossing a road on his own, is the equvialent of the Hinterstoisser Traverse on the bloody Eiger!.
If he's refusing to listen then he's not worth the effort.
Yep I just wish his slaves would wake up to themselves.

yeah when I was in school I had all kinds of shit said to me, like for example i was called the little blind girl. Well I have delt with all kinds of stupid shit in school. Well when I was in
school I graduated in 2003 and damn am I glad!!! I hate that the blind and visually Impaired and the multihandicapped are picked on , it's not our fault we have a disability we were born with it and if people have a problem with it then that's their problem not ours.. I mean it's almost like some people think that if you have a disability it is a freaky thing when it's not it's just different , when we are the same as they are , but we just do things differently
To some people, if you don't understand a certain person, they are automatically freaky. I hear about this stuff and I wonder if deep down, people wish for a world where everyone is pretty much identical.
the sad fact is that most of the public go through life without seeing anyone who is disabled. I spoke to an employment adviser at my local benifits office a few weeks back and we got talking about this very subject and why I, as a blind person, could not do the work I wanted to, even though I am able to do the work. the reason is that while a sighted caberait, and excuse the spelling, singer can go into a pub with his/her promo material and tout for business, if I, as a blind person was to do the same thing, i would not get any jobs, as the owners of the venus would see the fact I was blind a a barrier to my doing the job, which is crap, I setup my own gear, I don't ask others to carry any of it, I do my own reckies of the venus a few aeeks before to get the lie of the land and all that. This conversation with the employment adviser went along these lines, and she said to me that she'd never met a blind person, and wouldn't know how she'd. People fear blindness, they think the world ends if you lose your sight, and therefore bllind ppl can't possibly make it in the world, or do simple things such as make tea, which i make a lot of, or go into town. I think that children in primary and secondary schools should have awareness time built into their corriculum so that they may be more enlightened citizens.
I know this topic is old but I totally know what you mean Goblin. I know blind people liek this too that won't lift a finger to do anything for themselves. It's ridiculous! I guess all we can do is be ourselves and show them that we can do better, so so can they. You know? I mean, some people wont' change, but some will if they see they can.
Labyrinth and Dobbin I agree completely ..Dobin I tout for business solo and its no piece of cake..I have lost count of how often I have been asked to prove that I can do more than just carry the violin,or the lucrative commissions I've lost, purely because of the client being hard of understanding...Dobbin you are absolutely right with the fear factor...the sighted cannot concieve of how we are able to navigate across a room without hitting obstacles ect......
But here's a proposal..idealistic cerainly, but bear with me.The RNIB ect set up a college where the sighted can learn what it means to be blind, a certain number of students MUST attend each month as in school or face a hefty fine.. Most people laugh when I mention this, but is the idea so far fetched I think not...

I've heard of schools having some kind of disability awareness program where one of the excercises is for sighted folks to wear blindfolds to simulate blindness. Problem with that is that although they might be physically blind, psychologically, they're waiting for that blindfold to come off so things will be all better. In my way of thinking, no sighted person will ever really understand exactly what it's like to be blind until they actually suffer vision loss. Plus, a lot of sighted people would not want to be bothered learning about anyone disabled because they just don't see themselves having anything in common with the disabled. They stick with their crowd and we're supposed to stick with our own as well. Yeah, it's ignorant on their part, what with the world getting smaller and all, but let's face it, the disabled being in public is a relatively new thing and it may well take many decades or centuries before the public wises up.
Yeah we did this in my class where my fellow blind friend and I gave what's called an inservice. We don't do it as much as we did when we were younger as kids now are hopefully and generally a bit mroe reserved and mature and know how to put questions in an appropriate way. But we did the blindfold bit ,also taught about how to sighted guide, and let htem expeiment with braille ,braillers and canes and drawing and writing without being able to see. It was fun for the sighted and blind at a yougner age but got kinda old after awhile. In seom cases it helped but in others it just didn't.
